Dr. Yang specializes in blueberry production systems with expertise spanning blueberry field establishment, mechanical harvesting systems, nutrition, pruning, pest management, rootstocks, mycorrhiza, food safety, and international marketing. As the leader of Oregon’s blueberry extension program, he addresses both immediate and long-term industry challenges by collaborating with engineers, computer scientists, pest management specialists, horticulturists, and stakeholders. His most recent contribution to blueberry science is the development of the first commercial patent-pending rootstock for blueberries. His extension and research efforts include organizing educational programs and conducting applied research that directly benefits Oregon’s blueberry industry. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed journal and extension articles, along with more than 100 proceedings, newsletters, and trade articles. He has collaborated with machine harvester manufacturers, including OXBO Corporation, Littau Harvester, and FineField, to conduct extensive on-farm machine harvest trials in commercial blueberry fields. As the Project Director of a recently funded $7 million NIFA-SCRI CAP grant, he leads a transdisciplinary national team of researchers to develop harvester technologies for fresh market blueberries.
